Professor Ferrell teaches at Harvard Law School, including courses on Securities Regulation, Regulation of Market Structure, Law and Finance, Law and Corporate Finance, and Contracts. His research focuses on corporate governance, finance, the regulation of financial institutions, and securities regulation. He is a member of American Law Institute Project on the Application of United States Financial Regulations to Foreign Firms and Cross-Border Transactions and the ABA Task Force on Corporate Governance. He is also a faculty associate at the Kennedy School of Government and a research associate at the European Corporate Governance Institute. He was previously on the Board of Economic Advisors to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a research fellow at FINRA, and a member of the ABA Task Force on Corporate Governance.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Professor Ferrell served as a law clerk to Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. He then went on to serve as a law clerk to Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the United States Supreme Court and to earn his doctorate in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
