Professor Spatt teaches at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellow University, where his recent course offerings include Financial Regulation, Real Estate, Economic Issues in Financial Regulation, and Finance III (a Ph.D.-level seminar).

Professor Spatt currently serves on the Systemic Risk Council (2012 - present). From 2004 through 2007, he was the Chief Economist and Director of the Office of Economic Analysis at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. In 2010, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. After that, Professor Spatt served as a member of the Model Validation Council of the Federal Reserve Bank (2012 - 2015).

In addition to his government service, Professor Spatt has served on several boards, including as a member of the NASDAQ Economic Advisory Board, and in numerous editorial roles for profession journals (including as Advisory Editor of the Journal of Financial Markets (2003 - present), Associate Editor of Financial Management (1999 - 2005), Associate Editor of the Journal of Financial and Quant Analysis (1999 - present), on the Advisory Board of the Journal of Financial Abstracts's Real Estate Section (1996 - present), Associate Editor of Real Estate Economics(1995 - present), Executive Editor of the Review of Financial Studies (1990 - 1993), and Editor of the Review of Financial Studies (1987 - 1990)).
