Professor Pistor teaches at Columbia Law School, where her recent course offerings have included Corporations, Law & Development, and Lawyering Across Multiple Legal Orders. Before joining Columbia in 2001, she was an Assistant Professor for Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government (2000 - 2001), worked at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and Private International Law in Hamburg (1998 - 1999), was a Research Associate for the Harvard Institute for International Development (1995 - 1998), a Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School (1998 - 1999; 1994 - 1995), and a Senior Research Fellow for the Central European University Privatization Project (1993 - 1995).

Her research and teaching span corporate law, corporate governance, money and finance, property rights, and comparative law and legal institutions. She has published widely including in the Journal of Comparative Economics and the American Law and Economics Review, and with Chicago and Columbia University Presses. In 2012 she was co-recipient (with Martin Hellwig) of the Max Planck Research Award on International Financial Regulation. In 2014 she received the Allen & Overy Prize for the best working paper on law of the European Corporation Governance Institute. In 2015 she was elected member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. She is also the recipient of research grants by the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the National Science Foundation.

She has served as Principal Investigator of the Global Finance and Law Initiative (2011-2013), Member of the Board of Directors of the European Corporate Governance Institute (2011-2014), Research Associate with the Center for Economic Policy Research (2005 - present), and Editor of Economics of Transition (2011-2013).
