Professor Roberta S. Karmel teaches at Brooklyn Law School, where her recent course offerings have included Corporations, Securities Regulation, European Union Law, International Securities Regulatory Law Seminar, Investment Management Regulation, and Regulation of Financial Institutions and Markets Seminar. At Brooklyn, she has played a central role in leading the Dennis J. Block Center for the Study of International Business Law and in developing the Center for the Study of Business Law & Regulation.
Professor Karmel served as a Commissioner of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (1977 - 1980) and also as the Assistant Regional Administrator, Attorney Branch Chief, and Attorney in the Commission's New York Regional Office (1962 - 1969). She later served as a Public Director of the New York Stock Exchange (1983 - 1989). Immediately before and after serving as an SEC Commissioner, she practiced law at Rogers & Wells (1972 - 1977; 1980 - 1986) as both Partner and Of Counsel. She later practiced at Kelley Drye & Warren (1987 - 2002) also as both Partner and Of Counsel.
Professor Karmel is a trustee of the Practising Law Institute, a member of the American Law Institute, and a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She also serves on the ABA's Presidential Task Force on Financial Markets Regulatory Reform. She previously served as a director of the New York Chapter of the National Association of Corporate Directors and was the Vice-Chair of the International Coordinating Committee of the American Bar Association Business Law Section.
