Professor Gilson teaches at both Columbia Law School and Stanford Law School, where he teaches courses on corporate and securities law, including Corporate Acquisitions, Corporate Governance, Deals: The Economic Structure of Transactions and Contracts, Comparative Economic Organization, and The Economics of Venture Capital Contracting. His areas of expertise center around corporate and securities law, law and economics, and venture capital and private equity financing. He is also the independent board chair for the American Century Investments in Mountain View family of mutual funds, managing over $40 billion in assets.

Before joining Stanford in 1979, Professor Gilson practiced at Steinhart, Goldberg, Feigenbaum & Ladar, joining the firm in 1972 after serving as a law clerk to Judge David Bazelon.
